Not Guilty Plea Entered In Cantu Murder Case
A northern California woman accused of raping, drugging and murdering her 8-year-old neighbor pleaded not guilty at a hearing Friday.
Melissa Huckaby, 28, is accused of murdering Sandra Cantu, her daughter's playmate, who disappeared on March 27 and whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase in an irrigation pond on April 6.
San Joaquin County Court Judge Linda Lofthus scheduled a preliminary hearing for the case for Sept. 24.
Huckaby, a former Sunday school teacher, is also charged with child endangerment and furnishing a harmful substance. Prosecutors and police say she drugged another 7-year-old girl and a man months before Cantu was murdered. Both survived.

Tortured teen testimony released
A 16-year-old allegedly tortured for a year inside a Tracy home told a grand jury that he escaped because his captors talked about killing him and dumping his body in the Delta.
Afraid for his life, the boy — called Kyle in court papers — fled the Tennis Lane home on Dec. 1 by unlocking himself from the fireplace to which he was chained and using a trampoline to hop over the backyard wall.
After he heard his alleged captors talking on speakerphone about how they planned to cut off his fingers with a meat cleaver, Kyle said he knew then that he had to find a way out.
Husband and wife Michael Schumacher and Kelly Lau were arrested in December along with next-door neighbor Anthony Waiters and a woman named CarĂ©n Ramirez who called herself Kyle’s mom. Police said they starved, drugged and beat the boy for as many as 18 months after he fled a Sacramento group home in spring 2007.
The four could spend life in prison if found guilty of the several charges of torture, kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault with caustic chemicals and other forms of abuse.
Kyle told the grand jury that the abuse escalated from slapping and punching to slicing flesh and drawing blood for offenses as minor as forgetting to feed the dog or for taking food to slake his hunger.
Waiters once sliced Kyle’s arm with a steak knife, Kyle said. Ramirez held his arm down and Kyle screamed, the boy alleged. Kyle said that afterwards, the pair poured bleach on his cuts and doctored them with salt and butter before wrapping his arm in a paper towel.
Other times, Ramirez, Lau and Waiters would stick an aluminum baseball bat into the fireplace and brand Kyle’s back, the teen said.
The boy said Schumacher would sometimes punch him in the face until he passed out. Kyle also said he was chained to the fireplace, where he was forced to sleep most nights.
Lau used a belt once to choke him until he lost consciousness, Kyle said. She allegedly strapped a belt around his neck and buckled it. He dropped to the fireplace hearth and his arm fell on the grate while the fire blazed, he said.
“When I first woke up, I didn’t know what happened or anything,” he said. “So then I immediately noticed my arm was, like, discolored and everything, and I was, like, really freaking out, and at first I didn’t feel anything.”
To treat the burn, Kyle said Ramirez would just pour bleach on it. His wounds scabbed over and became infected.
Kyle was allegedly abused nearly every day until he bled, and that’s the only reason he ever got new clothes, he said.

Is there something in the water there in Tracy, California? These are true horror stories and according to some odd sounding people who left comments, other people knew it was going on or should have known and they did nothing about it.
What is going on in Tracy?

4 Accused Of Forcing 12-Year-Old To Drink Urine
HAWTHORNE, Fla. -- Four people arrested for holding a 12-year-old against his will and forcing him to drink urine at a Boy Scout camp have been dismissed from the scouting program, an official said Monday.
Jack Sears, district executive and CEO of North Florida Boy Scouts, said that officials are "gravely disappointed" and that the actions do not represent the values of scouting.
Kidnapping charges were filed Friday against 21-year-old Wendell Reid and three juveniles, two who are 16 and one who is 15. The juveniles were turned over to the Florida Department of Justice. Jail records do not show if Reid has an attorney. He's being held without bond in the Putnam County Jail.
Reid was attending Camp Shands as one of the adults from Ocala, Sears said.

Dallas police arrest mother in missing baby case
DALLAS — The mother of a 9-month-old girl who was reported abducted from her home told investigators the baby’s father actually dumped the infant’s dead body into Lewisville Lake near Dallas, according to court documents released Monday.
Tamaira Creagh, 19, was arrested on a charge of tampering with evidence, Dallas police said. Court documents say Creagh, who is six months pregnant, told police this weekend that the child’s body was dumped into the lake after she died while in her father’s care.
[...]
The baby’s father, 20-year-old Alandus Weaver, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of tampering or fabricating evidence to hinder an investigation.
[...]
Police began searching for Daisja Weaver last Tuesday after her mother reported a man broke into her apartment, tried to sexually assault her then took the baby. Investigators were suspicious from the start because the parents gave conflicting accounts of what happened.
During a meeting with detectives Saturday, Creagh told them she found the baby on the floor wrapped in a towel after Weaver picked her up from work June 8. Weaver said he had given the baby a bath earlier, Creagh told police, according to an affidavit.
[...]
The next day they drove to the lake just north of Dallas, where Weaver stopped at the bridge and then dropped the baby into the water with a sandbag tied to her, Creagh told police.

Another one in need of parenting class
A wild night in Largo ended up with a mom in jail and a teenager recovering from a bashing with a construction level. Cops say 47-year-old Deborah Castonguay had been serving rum shots to underage kids when an argument broke out.
They say Costonguay then tried to kick everyone out of the home at 429 1st Avenue NE.
As the argument escalated, Castonguay confronted her 14-year-old son's girlfriend on the home's porch. According to the police report, she grabbed a 4-foot construction level and hit the teenage girl knocking her out.
Costongual then stopped her son from making a call for emergency help by taking the phone away.

Attorney general asks why rapist didn’t face more charges
McALESTER — Oklahoma's attorney general wants to know why a man who admitted to raping a McAlester girl did not also face charges for abusing her older brother.
Two state legislators are separately calling for the removal of the judge who oversaw the controversial plea agreement that gave David Earls just one year in jail.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson said he is disturbed by the "lenient" deal struck last month with Earls, who pleaded no contest to raping and sodomizing the girl, then 4 years old.
District Judge Tom Bartheld ordered Earls, 64, to serve one year of a 20-year sentence. He was also credited for time he's spent in jail, meaning he will be released in three months.
Police initially identified the girl's brother, who was then 5, as a possible victim. Earls also faced a charge for forcing the boy to watch as he raped the girl.

Portrait of an Asshole (oh yeah, he'll get what's coming to him)
Prison Guard Accused of Killing Wife While Police At Door
A TDCJ guard was arrested Thursday and accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife. 38-year-old Samuel Vanparys is being held in the Walker County jail on a two million dollar bond. Vanparys is charged with first degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Ellen Buffington.
"I don't think I've ever been to a homicide where a victim was shot this many times before," said Lt. Kevin Lunsford. "It was very brazen with police standing just outside the door."
"Heard about three knocks and heard 'em say Police Department, open up," said Eloy Santistevan, who lives nears Vanparys' apartment.
"He said I can't come to the door right now and immediately began firing bap bap bap bap" said Lunsford.
"I just kept hearing 'em over and over and over again," said Santistevan.
"Literally within 10-15 seconds he had emptied his pistol, shot her 10-15 times, tossed out the gun and surrendered," said Lunsford.
27-year-old Ellen Marie Buffington died minutes later at the hospital. Police said Vanparys admitted planning to kill her because of a Child Protective Services investigation involving the couple's 4-year-old daughter.
Investigators said Vanparys lured Buffington to the apartment under the pretense of discussing child support, then told her his plan.
"That she needed to call her loved ones and tell them goodbye and she did," said Lunsford.
Those calls led police to the apartment, but not in time to stop what police consider to be a deadly plan already in motion.

Archbishop Says He Didn't Know Raping Children Was A Crime
In the early years of the sex abuse scandal in Milwaukee, retired Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland says in his soon-to-be released memoir, he did not comprehend the potential harm to victims or understand that what the priests had done constituted a crime.
"We all considered sexual abuse of minors as a moral evil, but had no understanding of its criminal nature," Weakland says in the book, "A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church," due out in June.
Weakland said he initially "accepted naively the common view that it was not necessary to worry about the effects on the youngsters: either they would not remember or they would 'grow out of it.' "
Clergy victims reacted angrily to the revelation.
"It's beyond belief. He's either lying or he's so self-deceived that he's inventing fanciful stories," said Peter Isely, Midwest director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP. "These have always been crimes."
Weakland's handling of the clergy sex abuse scandal is just one chapter in the wide-ranging memoir that recounts his childhood in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania, his life as a Benedictine monk, his struggles with his own homosexuality, his strained relationship with Pope John Paul II and finally his public fall from grace in Milwaukee.
Weakland retired in 2002 after it became known that he paid $450,000 in 1998 to a man who had accused him of date rape years earlier.
