Neighbors called the cops at about 7:30 a.m. because the kids were running around loose in the apartment complex. Abernathy had left them alone since about two or three in the morning. When the kids were let back in their apartment, the 1-year-old immediately went to the pantry and began eating dog food.
The fridge had almost nothing in it but booze. By the way, Abernathy doesn't turn 21 until later this month.
UPDATE: Cops changed the story on Tuesday after New Times called for clarification. Now, police say neither of the kids was actually seen eating dog food.

Dallas police arrest mother in missing baby case
DALLAS — The mother of a 9-month-old girl who was reported abducted from her home told investigators the baby’s father actually dumped the infant’s dead body into Lewisville Lake near Dallas, according to court documents released Monday.
Tamaira Creagh, 19, was arrested on a charge of tampering with evidence, Dallas police said. Court documents say Creagh, who is six months pregnant, told police this weekend that the child’s body was dumped into the lake after she died while in her father’s care.

The baby’s father, 20-year-old Alandus Weaver, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of tampering or fabricating evidence to hinder an investigation. [...]
Police began searching for Daisja Weaver last Tuesday after her mother reported a man broke into her apartment, tried to sexually assault her then took the baby. Investigators were suspicious from the start because the parents gave conflicting accounts of what happened.
During a meeting with detectives Saturday, Creagh told them she found the baby on the floor wrapped in a towel after Weaver picked her up from work June 8. Weaver said he had given the baby a bath earlier, Creagh told police, according to an affidavit.

The next day they drove to the lake just north of Dallas, where Weaver stopped at the bridge and then dropped the baby into the water with a sandbag tied to her, Creagh told police.

Girl hurt as mom reaching for whiskey crashes SUV
CHICAGO - Chicago police have arrested a mother who was allegedly reaching for a bottle of whiskey when her SUV crashed, injuring her 9-year-old daughter.
Officer Michael Fitzpatrick says 48-year-old Cheryl Ranae Reynolds has been charged with reckless driving and aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, among other offenses. He says Reynolds was driving on the city's South Side Saturday evening when the bottle fell to the floor.
Fitzpatrick says she reached for it, causing the crash. He says Reynolds' daughter was sitting in the passenger's seat and hit her head on the windshield. Both were taken to a hospital with injuries.
Officials say testing shows Reynolds blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.

A wild night in Largo ended up with a mom in jail and a teenager recovering from a bashing with a construction level. Cops say 47-year-old Deborah Castonguay had been serving rum shots to underage kids when an argument broke out.
They say Costonguay then tried to kick everyone out of the home at 429 1st Avenue NE.
As the argument escalated, Castonguay confronted her 14-year-old son's girlfriend on the home's porch. According to the police report, she grabbed a 4-foot construction level and hit the teenage girl knocking her out.
Costongual then stopped her son from making a call for emergency help by taking the phone away.

Cops say that's basically what Robin Bas told them.
They caught the attention of a loss prevention officer at a Beall's Department store where they were seen picking out some clothes and jewelry.
They went into a dressing room and came out without the items, according to police.
The two were intercepted in the parking lot, escorted back inside and the cops were called.
The loot was found in a bag they were carrying.
The daughter said they were working together as a team.
Mom said she was just trying to make her daughter happy.

Mom accused of duct-taping daughter's boyfriendAuthorities say a San Bernardino County woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to kidnap her daughter's boyfriend and haul him away to Northern California.
A sheriff's spokeswoman said Tuesday that Anna Gaffney and Linda Chevalier went to the young man's home on Saturday afternoon and tried to tie him up with duct tape. The victim told authorities the women said they were taking him to Northern California to get him away from Gaffney's 21-year-old daughter.
Authorities say both women were arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping.
Officials say the girlfriend was later arrested for investigation of dissuading a witness and extortion for allegedly trying to get her boyfriend to recant his statements to authorities.
