Ex-NY policeman gets 32 years in ex-wife's killing

NEW YORK - A retired New York City police sergeant has been sentenced to 32 years to life in prison for killing his ex-wife, a well-known 1960s singer.

Sixty-three-year-old John Galtieri (gal-tee-EHR'-ee) was convicted by a Staten Island jury in February of murder and weapon possession. He shot 58-year-old Jeanne Kane in January 2007 while she sat in her car in a parking lot waiting to pick up her daughter.

Kane was a member of the singing group the Kane Triplets, who performed regularly on TV variety shows including the Ed Sullivan and Jack Benny programs.

Galtieri was caught in South Carolina the day after the shooting. His lawyer had claimed cell phone records and video showed Galtieri wasn't in Staten Island at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors say the couple's divorce followed years of domestic violence.
